Who I am

I’m Timofei Bugaevskii, a senior full-stack engineer and technical leader based in Portugal.

For more than 20 years, I’ve been building, modernizing, and scaling web applications and internal platforms across e-commerce, marketplaces, education, media, and business automation. My background combines:

Deep hands-on engineering (backend, frontend, DevOps, databases, performance).
Leadership experience (department head, team lead, project manager).
Strong communication with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

I currently work as an independent contractor, partnering with US/UK/EU companies that need a principal-level engineer who can own a complex platform end-to-end.

Interactive — from the Latin interact — to interact. I am convinced that life is not only movement, but to a greater extent, interaction.

Professional background

Engineering & architecture

Over the years, I have:

Modernized and scaled a large online hypermarket with hundreds of thousands of products and millions of daily requests as the sole developer responsible for architecture, performance, and new features.
Rescued and optimized a Video/audio/chat marketplace, upgrading Vue 2→3, shrinking bundles from ~1.6 GB to ~300 MB, cutting page load times from 6.5s to around 1s, and making the system easier to maintain.
Built and extended multi-tenant SaaS platforms, including an online learning portal with automated tenant setup, custom domains (Route53), and CI/CD.
Worked on Rust-based data and news platforms and integrated LLM-driven workflows (OCR, classification, summarization) into existing systems.
Designed and maintained cloud infrastructure (AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD) and put in place reliable backup and monitoring practices.

My core technical stack includes PHP/Laravel, Vue/React/Next.js, Rust, Python/Flask, PostgreSQL/MySQL, Redis, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, and more.

Leadership & management

Beyond coding, I have significant leadership experience:

Worked as Head of Software Localization Department at 1C, a large software vendor with thousands of employees and partners, managing tools used across internal teams and external partner networks.
Led engineering teams delivering web projects for international clients, coordinating developers, QA, translators, designers, and client stakeholders.
Acted as an IT project manager, responsible for scoping, planning, and delivering projects on time while balancing technical constraints with business needs.

This experience lets me comfortably step into roles where I lead or support a team, not just contribute as an individual developer.

How I work

I prefer long-term collaborations where I can deeply understand the product and business, and then:

Provide a clear assessment of the current architecture and codebase.
Propose a pragmatic modernization and improvement roadmap.
Implement the most critical changes myself and/or guide your team.
Establish better processes: code review, documentation, CI/CD, monitoring, reports, and metrics.

I’m used to working fully remote with distributed teams and have been doing so for many years. Clear written communication, transparency, and predictable delivery are important to me.

What I’m looking for

I’m open to:

Principal engineer roles where I own a complex platform, performance, modernization, and architecture.
Fractional CTO / technical lead engagements with startups and growing businesses.

I’m especially interested in:

High-traffic platforms (e-commerce, marketplaces, content sites).
Products that need significant technical debt reduction and performance improvements.
Systems where Rust, LLMs, or advanced integrations can provide real value.

Built and maintained various internal tools, robots, and utilities to support developers and content teams.
Contributed to community and civil-society projects and helped organize and grow volunteer organizations.
Written technical articles, guides, and documentation aimed at helping teams make better architectural decisions.
